The gang descend into the crypt of La Maison Taal on a race against time — the undead army is at the gates, Gelato has defected to the dwarves for one last honourable stand, and somewhere beneath the monastery lies the key to stopping the Lichmaster. Keys are tried, founders are disturbed, and secret doors are discovered. Then a booby-trapped staircase deposits all three adventurers — unceremoniously and thoroughly — somewhere they really didn't want to end up.

What follows involves a large constrictor snake, a great deal of swearing, and an unexpected negotiation with some very determined rat-adjacent creatures who have already found exactly what our heroes were looking for. A deal is struck, the box is secured, and somehow — against all odds — the party emerges ready for the final confrontation. Covered in filth, but ready.

Mark:

Welcome back to RPG Blokes. Before you all leave to go to the crypt, there is a call that comes out for Gelato. And it is Bardak. And he meets you outside the room. He says, Gelato, don't take any notice of those others. We could do with you on the wall. This is the time where you can redeem yourself. Don't get involved with what any of these manlings are doing. Come and join your brethren. Make a final stand with us.

Little Mark:

Yeah, I'll do that.

Mark:

John Louis looks a bit disappointed, but he does see that it was going to be difficult to hold on to Gelato.

Stephen:

Traitor.

Jon:

Then after they've all died, then he can go and make a final stand with us.

Mark:

Okay, so Gelato leaves with Bardak.

Little Mark:

Yeah, I'll go.

Mark:

And you'd be happy to do that.

Little Mark:

To be honest, he'd rather do that anyway, because he's trying to build, he's trying to make amends, isn't he? So if anything, he'd rather do anything.

Barry:

The penultimate stand doesn't have the same ring to it.

Mark:

Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so Bardak looks quite pleased that you've decided to come within and leave these other stretches behind. So the rest of you then get led to the crypt. When you're ready, John Louis shows you the crypt entrance at the edge of the monastery. It's a stone building the size of a small hut, setting a small enclosure against the west wall of the monastery. And as you walk across the monastery complex to the crypt entrance, you can see that the work is well underway. The dwarves have raised the wall by another three feet and reinforced the gates with piles of stones. and a few yards inside the encircling wall the monks and villagers have laid down a second wall of brushwood and straw ready to be soaked in oil and fired if the undead break through the first line of defense you watch as gelato goes over there and joins the dwarves and a few of them seem to be happy that he's there others don't.

Jon:

I can stand on his shoulders and get those extra few feet on the wall.

Mark:

Yeah i'm not gonna i'm not gonna map this i'm not gonna put it on paper so i'm gonna do theater of the mind on this i don't want to overcomplicate it because we are a podcast mainly most people um would be listening to this audio only so we'll try and do it with theater of the mind so listen just.

Barry:

To be clear i have no problem with theater of the mind as long as any ambiguity goes in our favor we.

Stephen:

Can take advantage of that yeah.

Barry:

Yeah yeah.

Jon:

Okay with near-death experiences as long as they're not mine.

Mark:

Okay someone who's died yeah so john louis opens a, an iron bound door of the crypt building and leads you inside the structure is empty apart from a flight of steps going down into the rock of the mountainside as the crypt is down there here are the keys i can help you know further please hurry you've got the torches that he's been i just.

Barry:

Feel when he said he can help it help us no further I am going to say I'm not entirely sure you've helped us at all and take the keys We've got keys.

Jon:

Now.

Stephen:

Keys is a.

Jon:

Start Is this how many keys there.

Mark:

Are? Yeah it's a ring of keys He looks at you Silas he goes We have resolved our issues No.

Barry:

We have what's known as a working relationship. That's not the same as resolved. And then I'm just going to turn my back on him and walk off.

Stephen:

Compensation.

Jon:

Will you stop treating him like management for just a minute?

Barry:

Stop treating him like the function he is currently fulfilling. Fuck off, job.

Stephen:

Compensation.

Mark:

He takes it on board. I've got no defense against the argument really at all. He sent you to your death. You're letting him off lightly, I think. under the circumstances.

Barry:

I think my restraint should be acknowledged indeed.

Mark:

Yeah, or rewarded, as Dorian would like to say.

Stephen:

Yeah, absolutely. I'm going to top this up. If I could read and write, I'd be writing it down. It's all up here.

Mark:

Okay, so you go down the steps, the flight of steps. I should have some form of marching order here, so the three of you.

Stephen:

How do you detect traps in this game?

Jon:

You are going, click, fuck.

Stephen:

How do you detect cuts before that happens?

Mark:

Perception.

Jon:

Oh.

Mark:

They say perception, so that would be a...

Jon:

Oh, it's gruff brother, padre, what's his face? We shove him ahead of us.

Stephen:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Jon:

Into something pointy, I think that's a...

Mark:

But if there's a single file, which there is down these stairs, what is your marching order?

Barry:

I would clearly be in the front.

Stephen:

My perception is okay. It's pretty good, but I would not go in the front.

Mark:

The Silas then I.

Barry:

Mean we put the hard nut at the front right yeah okay yeah I.

Stephen:

Suppose yeah.

Jon:

The other way of track detection.

Stephen:

I'm gonna I'll be behind him with a torch and I'll try and light the way and try and spot stuff before he walks into it.

Barry:

Yes and I will be I mean obviously I understand it's all relative but I will be you know treading cautiously play.

Mark:

Yeah okay trepidation so you're walking down this flight of steps the word traps.

Barry:

Has been mentioned on multiple occasions even silas is beginning to take it seriously.

Mark:

We're in the tomb of.

Stephen:

Bloody horrors now yeah.

Mark:

This part of the tomb at least you've been told that it is functioning they do use it eventually to you'd see as you come down these stairs you're about 20 feet underground now.

Jon:

Now i've got practically no chance of doing it but i will be looking out for uh Maybe scrape marks by a wall that doesn't appear to have a door. Because if there's a hidden laboratory or something, it might be.

Mark:

Yeah, okay. I'll say that you're constantly looking out for that kind of thing if you're expecting to find concealed doors.

Jon:

He's read about these things.

Mark:

Yeah.

Jon:

No experience.

Mark:

So at the bottom of these steps, there are main doors here made of heavy, rough hornbeam marked with deer skull motives because this is obviously a temple of Tal, a monastery of Tal. inlaid brass plaques. The doors are locked.

Stephen:

Ah, ah, well. Oh, yeah, we've got keys, haven't we?

Barry:

Yes.

Stephen:

Otherwise, that's it.

Jon:

Sorry, that was jangling keys. Let's go. Hello.

Barry:

I don't think either in my whole RPG career, I don't think I've ever had keys to a door. It's either been unlocked or it's locked. That's a really novel thing.

Jon:

Here's where we find if he's really set us up. They might not be the keys to these doors, and he might have locked the door behind us.

Mark:

God, that's cynical. You only get to be like that after 40 years of playing games, guys. I think we let Barry open the door because it's a novelty for him to actually have a key. I think it's only fair that Barry...

Barry:

I'm going to open the door.

Jon:

I've got to explain what a key is.

Stephen:

You're going to kick the door down.

Mark:

Yeah, you set off a trap. No, I'm just joking.

Stephen:

Kick it down anyway, come on.

Mark:

No, there's no trap. Wouldn't do that. And your first opened door with a key experience. you find yourself in a large looking into a large chamber containing two rows of stone sarcophagi these are of great antiquity and small brass plates about two feet square cover the walls and behind the plates and niches containing the bodies of dead monks of maize and tile there are 30 or so plates set into each wall of this room and they're just big enough these niches are just big enough to contain a body. This is obviously not used regularly, but you wouldn't expect to find too much danger in here. It is a functioning crypt.

Jon:

But what we want to do is do this before Heinrich gets within range of whatever mojo he do.

Stephen:

How big is this box we're looking for?

Mark:

Yeah. So the thought of this being ammunition, effectively, for Kemla, who is the Lichmaster of course, although I don't think anybody calls in that just yet.

Barry:

Could we not burn them all now?

Stephen:

Maybe we could remove the treasure, just in case.

Barry:

That's an old school gamer that is right now.

Mark:

You.

Stephen:

Never know you never know.

Mark:

I think you've.

Jon:

Got to be alive to spend it let's find the thing that means we win let's go.

Mark:

For that destroying these bodies has to be a last result they've all been very respectably put to rest but there's a lot of ceremony gone into this place it's a crypt of great importance and isn't that the point.

Jon:

In those if they've been laid with proper ceremony doesn't that stop.

Barry:

Them from being turned undead.

Jon:

Is that what oh mind you that's priests of maul i don't know if uh.

Mark:

Blimey yeah.

Jon:

Let's assume they're gonna get up we.

Mark:

Don't get a little that's what you believe in you'll find out to.

Stephen:

Be have pictures of what we're looking for like the box and stuff was like the arc of the covenant i was like what did it look like that's.

Mark:

What i'm hoping for you don't know no you've got no idea don't.

Stephen:

Look at it.

Mark:

We're gonna.

Jon:

Melt the bastard yeah.

Barry:

It'll be it'll be the one at the center past all the traps the light shining on it.

Mark:

So the only other way out of this main crypt is a pair of hornbeam doors almost identical to the main doors you walk through and they're on the other side of this large room.

Jon:

Ok take a quick look at the names here I'm not expecting a muscadie to be here but.

Mark:

There isn't there are a variety of empire names and Bretonian names that are here. None of these look like high-ranking monks that were interred here. okay so the doors on the opposite side and yeah they're locked too if anyone was to try go.

Barry:

Through we have more than one key on it has it been.

Mark:

The same.

Jon:

Key so far i'm.

Mark:

Not well.

Jon:

It's not one type of lock or is it just go through until we get lucky.

Mark:

Yes go through until you get lucky great which you're doing barry i think silas is yes.

Barry:

I am i'm cycling how many keys are on this key ring.

Mark:

So you got so.

Barry:

What i'd like to do.

Mark:

Is if you'll.

Barry:

Let me have it retroactively i'd like to put some kind of distinguishing mark on the ones that i've used so at least i'm not trying them as we go through.

Mark:

Okay just in case well i'm not.

Jon:

Fighting so i can hold those and just fold up so yeah i'll just fold up the ones we've used perfect yeah.

Mark:

Just in case there's race against time to get a door open you can minimize those those odds okay so this door is now open and you're looking down a passageway and there are three oak doors blackened with age the lead off this short passage two of them on your right hand side and the third one is on the left and at the very end of this short passage there is another door so there's four doors and five doors including the one you're walking through or.

Jon:

On the doors.

Mark:

Yes well the little one.

Jon:

Might be to a lad that's what i'm hoping for but.

Mark:

It's two on your right one on your left and one right at the end of the passage.

Stephen:

We've got a lot of keys there's uh yeah.

Mark:

Which one are you going to go to first then.

Stephen:

First one first.

Mark:

Yeah the first one on the romance undeniable.

Barry:

Logic to that dorian.

Mark:

Yeah i.

Stephen:

Like using logic.

Mark:

Yeah another another key is used then to get this door open and this contains a single stone sarcophagus of great antiquity it's got inscriptions on it in classical which would identify the the occupants can anyone read classical yeah yeah okay it is the founder or one of the founders of la maison tall and the walls are carved with fake windows through which the landscape around the monastery can be seen carved into the walls in low relief, This chamber appears to have not been opened for some time. There's dust on the floor. It's so thick that it's quite obviously not been disturbed for centuries.

Stephen:

I look to Facton. Is this it?

Jon:

Doubtful, because that wouldn't be Muscadet, would it? Because he was just the last guy, not the founder.

Mark:

Okay, moving along to the next one. It's the same. This is another founder with its own side crypt.

Jon:

Okay. Make sure we lock these after us, because just in case they do get up. Yeah, absolutely. A few rounds before they...

Barry:

Listen, any of these doors that isn't a thoroughfare of some kind, we will lock behind.

Mark:

Okay, it's a fair call, because if you remember, when the previous skeletons had been animated from the burial mounds from the blue-blooded bandits, and you've been fighting those skeletons, there were skeletal heroes that were the more powerful, more prominent members of the blue-buddy bandits.

Barry:

Yeah.

Mark:

Well, you've not met yet the skeleton or the raised leader of the bandits.

Jon:

In character, you couldn't mention that, but I think you mentioned that one or two had names.

Mark:

Yes, they did.

Stephen:

Named champions, yeah.

Mark:

So these are named champions too. So not a bad idea keeping the doors locked on them.

Jon:

Not bad.

Mark:

Yeah. Okay. And the last one along that passage, before you reach the door at the end, is the same. But those that are perceptive amongst you, but I don't need you to roll on this because it's fairly obvious that the dust on the floor here is, it's definitely been disturbed more recently and it's not so thick.

Jon:

If only we had a ranger here to tell us how recently, I mean, that would be really spot on, wouldn't it?

Mark:

Within the last five or 10 years. It's not the entire crypt, just an area of it, like walking from the door over to the far wall.

Jon:

So just how do we sneak in and pinch that staff of withering?

Mark:

Well, the crypt itself is another one of the founding members of the monastery.

Barry:

So I'm going to... Did you just say that it looked like... The dust looked like someone had walked over to the wall and back?

Mark:

Yes, it does, yeah.

Barry:

So I'm going to walk over to where I think, like, the dust cautiously, watching my step, looking for anything out of the ordinary, and I'm going to go over to where I think, like... where it leads to the wall and examine that area of the wall.

Mark:

Yeah. You can see there's a slight scrape on the floor near that wall.

Jon:

That's what I was looking for.

Mark:

Yes, but you didn't find it. Silas did. It is a secret door.

Stephen:

There was some giveaways there.

Jon:

You want to still flat-tunk? Overestimate my bravery.

Barry:

I'm not trying to steal flat-tunk's glory. Well, you know, we found it.

Mark:

Yeah, okay. It's been found. And there is obviously a secret door in that wall. so you can start.

Jon:

Pushing stones and yeah.

Mark:

It has it has a keyhole concealed as a knot hole in the tree in the carved carved out landscape that this room also has carved into the wall we got.

Jon:

A key that fits or are we looking at the mark ii boot through the door.

Mark:

No you have a key that fits it's an old key it's one of the least used keys amongst the on the ring all right okay so you can you open that and this is a passenger right now leading forward into darkness.

Jon:

Well, we have thought to it, so it's not that dark.

Mark:

Yeah.

Jon:

And it's still dark, in which case we're in trouble.

Mark:

There is one remaining door at the end of the previous passageway that you haven't opened but not necessarily needed to do so. I just wanted to point that out because we're not mapping things with paper.

Jon:

Is it worth checking the other one quickly to see if that's must? That would mean we might get staff.

Stephen:

Sure.

Barry:

Annoyingly, it is worth checking, isn't it?

Jon:

Right. to still do that.

Mark:

But pretty.

Jon:

Quickly it's all pop in hasn't been disturbed easy.

Mark:

Okay so you another key opens the door to this this is the crypt of the masters it's a large chamber and it contains 14 stone sarcophagi and each one of those is a previous master of la maison tile and the most recent of course is that of muscadet okay.

Jon:

Muscadet is where i'm gonna lose one of my hands It's going to retroactively do all the artwork to have a look around it and see if there's anything.

Stephen:

Was it buried within the stuff?

Jon:

I don't know. I think so, but.

Mark:

You don't know, yeah.

Stephen:

Well, let's have a look around. A look around the Tsukov. Yeah, the two.

Mark:

So this tomb, a lot of it has got dust on it, but this tomb in particular, the one with muské, is brand new. So it's brand new, newly carved. are you aware that he only died what would now only be maybe two three weeks ago right the current master John Louis Dintranz is very new to the job.

Stephen:

It is brand new.

Jon:

Well, we mean no disrespect, but.

Stephen:

I'm going to.

Jon:

Need to borrow what you might be getting.

Stephen:

And look around it and see if there's any sort of traps hidden on it or anything.

Mark:

Okay. So what we do is you act. I won't make the rolls for traps, but if you say you're looking, then we'll make a roll if you then do then set something off.

Jon:

Great.

Stephen:

I ain't no trap on that, I say.

Jon:

I'm guessing you wouldn't have a kill.

Mark:

You are such a coward.

Jon:

By looking, can we figure out if it's like a swivel to sort of lift something? Or is it a pop open?

Mark:

It is a pop open. You'd have to lift it from all corners, really, to do so safely. Just take the lid off the sarcophaga. It's very heavy.

Jon:

And it's stone, so it'll take all of us. Because we've not got a dwarf or even a ranger.

Stephen:

We can't take each of the corners.

Mark:

He's a turncoat gelato. It's bucked off. If you do this by yourself. so yes one of you will have to take two corners I think who's the strongest I imagine it's Silas but you never know.

Jon:

I can hope so.

Mark:

Yeah that'd be strength yeah yes.

Stephen:

36 yeah I've got 39 yeah.

Mark:

Okay I've.

Jon:

Got more than that.

Stephen:

It's the same but.

Mark:

Between the three of you then but two reasonably strong people you can lift the top off the sarcophagi and there he is he died an old man and his body is not fully decayed so you can still quite clearly see his feet.

Jon:

Still going to be a bit lively unless he's been stuffed full of fragrant herbs and I was going to say.

Mark:

It's going to be.

Barry:

A bit musky at the very minimum isn't.

Mark:

It it is yeah so it's unpleasant you'd have a bit of bit of that, a bit of preservation put to his body.

Barry:

Reminds me of the locker rooms back in the pit.

Jon:

Not that bad.

Stephen:

The jump traps.

Mark:

And he does have a staff, come to think of it.

Stephen:

There you go.

Mark:

Yeah.

Jon:

Okay.

Mark:

It's a gnarled, long oaken staff that doesn't look like it could be used as a weapon, more of a walking staff or something to support him as he gets decrepit. but definitely something that was significant enough to be buried with him.

Jon:

Is it worth tapping at the side, see if something was underneath?

Mark:

Can I have a little feel around?

Jon:

No, no, no, just tap.

Mark:

Everything seems solid. No, there's nothing there other than the body and the staff. A little bit disrespectful.

Jon:

But I'll trade him. I'll put my mind in his hands so he's got something in the afterlife. I don't know how this...

Mark:

Okay, you had a staff with you.

Stephen:

It's the same weight.

Mark:

Yeah, do you Indiana Jones trick?

Jon:

I doubt it. I'll just, as carefully as I can, just pop that out.

Stephen:

You wouldn't have trapped this thing, would they?

Jon:

He'd get rid of the Gravewoods for a reason. I don't want him to go without, but if it's this one, if it is...

Mark:

So, yeah, you've got...

Jon:

Is there theme music? shaft of light big ball do.

Mark:

You have any magic sense or anything you do don't you fact because you've got those latent magical abilities that will eventually put it back, because you're eventually going to become a wizard that is your destiny because you've been drawn as one in 40 years time, then you can sense this stuff is magical and potentially you would have some control over its use as well you'd have to spend some time with it and attuned to it. But, yes, you can definitely tell that this staff has power.

Jon:

Okay. I think this is it. I'm not quite sure what to do, but I'm sure...

Stephen:

We're just poking with it, don't you?

Jon:

Hopefully, yeah.

Stephen:

Sorry.

Jon:

I won't be using his walking stick. I'll be keeping it at home, please, until I can figure out what's in it.

Stephen:

Get the box in, one out of two.

Jon:

Yeah, could be that. might be literally plug and play so make sure we put the lead back as respectfully as we can thank the interred for his contribution to everyone's survival it might be meaningless words but again, there's no ill will here is there.

Mark:

No, you don't sense any bad mojo, any bad vibes coming from the action.

Jon:

If there is a curse, I'm the one that gets it.

Mark:

Well, you're going to use it to defend La Maison Talle. That's your intention. So any curse, any feeling that you might have are definitely not happening just yet if you walk off with it.

Stephen:

Don't put it back.

Jon:

That's not my plan.

Mark:

Yes, that's not your plan.

Jon:

It's not a hat.

Stephen:

But it would go very nicely with my hat. as a walking staff.

Mark:

Okay.

Jon:

You just want to be a halfling, don't you?

Stephen:

Yeah. Or maybe a wizard.

Mark:

What are you doing now?

Stephen:

Let's go for the secret door.

Jon:

Now we go down that third. Yeah.

Mark:

Yeah. Okay. It goes down. Your torch illuminates the full length of the corridor after going down it a little while, and it turns to the left further down.

Jon:

Okay. Is it a sudden turn or is it just it?

Mark:

Yeah, it's a sudden turn. So check out the...

Jon:

Area before the sudden turn.

Mark:

Okay nothing like.

Stephen:

Around it because.

Mark:

You do see the signs of a secret door at the far end straight ahead of you so it's not yeah it's this is a concealed door like.

Stephen:

A concealed door no.

Mark:

It's not now.

Jon:

This could be also be a trap.

Mark:

The trouble is with this secret door is it it doesn't look in particularly good condition so it's seen better days so if you're if you're shining a light on the wall and and looking out for these things already then it's a given that you can see see that there and to your to your left there's the corridor turns to your left and there's flight steps going downwards it.

Stephen:

All looks interesting we got is it a keyhole in it.

Mark:

There is a keyhole yes.

Jon:

Okay, go through the keys, see if there's one that fits.

Mark:

Yeah, one does.

Barry:

Keeping up the system, I like it, I like it.

Jon:

Okay.

Stephen:

Rocking through these keys.

Jon:

Also, stand to the side. So if you're going to have a trap, this will be where I'll put it.

Stephen:

Oh, make sure we have a look around the door.

Mark:

Yeah, there's nothing else here. No trap triggers if you're just going to unlock it.

Jon:

Cool.

Mark:

Okay. So you open the door and there's a flight of steps going down here also.

Jon:

Another one. Okay.

Stephen:

These ones have got to be better.

Jon:

Shall I go first? Two flights of steps. why holding the staff before me like a talisman.

Mark:

Yeah you can go you're going to go down first okay so and something.

Jon:

To tap ahead with because old school.

Mark:

You descend another 15 or 20 feet so you'd be 40 feet or more underground now and when you reach the bottom it turns a passageway turns immediately to the right so you can't see around it the steps stop and then you've got about another, five yards and then it turns to the right okay.

Jon:

I'll do the same things we did up there check that sudden turn for a concealed thing.

Mark:

Okay um so as you get further down to the bottom here you can see that this would be this is a trap it's not you don't have to make a perception of to see it it's pretty clear this is set up to be a trap the floor is made of wood obviously in previous centuries or decades it may have been better concealed but the floor is planks of wood and there's, There's stuff scattered on top of it to make it look like it's the normal floor, but it's fallen down through the cracks. And you'd think that if you were to step on those planks, they would break and you would fall into the pit underneath. The other thing you do notice around here now, as you go further down these steps, is there's a horrendous stench.

Barry:

Even more than opening the fucking sarcophagus.

Mark:

Yeah, well, I suppose it's a different stench. This is the stench of excrement.

Stephen:

Oh.

Mark:

No.

Stephen:

Excrements?

Mark:

Yes.

Stephen:

That was like the back alleys that the city we were in.

Jon:

The dunnies have got to go somewhere, I suppose.

Mark:

And if you've ever been there, a sewer.

Stephen:

Down here.

Mark:

This is the smell of a sewer. Yeah.

Jon:

I suppose a trap to stop.

Stephen:

People coming into it, do you think? Or leaving it?

Jon:

I guess. Was the Maison originally built as a fortress?

Mark:

No, it's never been that.

Jon:

Hmm. can we easily step over this uh plank section or is that going to be a.

Mark:

You can step over it yeah you can walk to you can you can step around the the area there's there's solid stone floor just around the edge of it so you can carefully make your way around it.

Jon:

Well i'll point it out and uh yeah if this is where the sewers lead it it's either a really good concealment for a the borrower tree it's literally not do we want to try the other one.

Stephen:

This feels like relieving the crypt here doesn't it.

Mark:

Both steps lead downwards so this one was being yeah so what you're finding here is that this place is so old that potentially any danger from the traps and secret doors hidden they're all pretty obvious to see as it's just fallen into such a state of disrepair.

Stephen:

Why trap it there's not saying valuable.

Jon:

Or it's to stop someone from sneaking in from the sewers, I guess. But that's weird.

Stephen:

They've put the stairs after the door, haven't they? So they should have put the door at the bottom of the stairs if they didn't want anyone to find the place.

Jon:

No, something comes up through the sewers.

Stephen:

Yeah, but then it finds the stairs going up to a blank wall, doesn't it? Which is a crazy way of designing that. If they just put the ball down the bottom, then it won't have attracted anyone in the first place.

Jon:

It's first edition they was on a budget.

Stephen:

You just think it's bad design rather than this is where we've got to go because yeah if i'm walking through a series and i see a set of stairs going up to a black wall i'm thinking wow that's that's a secret door that's.

Jon:

Why i was checking corners because.

Stephen:

Sudden turn.

Jon:

That that's weird that takes engineering and structure.

Stephen:

Whereas if it was just.

Jon:

Bent around naturally that would have been yeah just carry on.

Stephen:

I guess we can have a look past it and see where it goes and we could always come back.

Mark:

Okay um are the.

Jon:

Torches burning a different color or flaring.

Mark:

Up or maybe a little bit but yeah there is definitely an open sewer here somewhere there's some some things as long.

Jon:

As there's airflow you should be all right.

Mark:

Yeah yeah you're okay it's not going to poison you it's just unpleasant not.

Jon:

Poison it's going whoosh and boom and.

Mark:

Yeah okay yeah but you don't have any way of protecting the flame you don't have lantern so you'd have to take a risk there keep.

Jon:

An eye on it if it starts okay so.

Mark:

This corner here at the bottom of the stairs where this trap this pit trap is you will you can edge around the edge of the the boards of this trap and you can see around the corner there's a flight of stairs going up.

Jon:

Oh that doesn't indicate words does it that's just weird it okay but the smells coming from.

Mark:

You're unsure it's definitely filling this corridor.

Stephen:

Maybe there's been a leak.

Jon:

They might just not like plumbers. That might not have been a shroud. That could just be a thing that's supposed to be, you put it back to gain access to clean through or something like that, I suppose.

Stephen:

Let's pet. Let's go.

Jon:

Yeah. Okay.

Mark:

So thanks, and you're going up first, I guess?

Jon:

I guess, yeah.

Mark:

Okay. So you make your way to the top, and you can see at the top of these stairs there's a door. But as you reach within sight of the door, the stairs suddenly go flat the.

Stephen:

Old flat stairs.

Barry:

Oh yeah it's a classic.

Mark:

Classic the old.

Barry:

Classic stairs everyone knows it's slippy slidey.

Mark:

So the stairs retract to form a sheer surface and the whole area falls away and you all three of you are dumped down this chute effectively which goes down please tell me.

Barry:

We're not going to the poo.

Mark:

Towards the trap that you found that that you walked around at the bottom of the staircase.

Stephen:

Well, that one. Well, at least we get to see it.

Mark:

Okay. But you do get a chance to stop yourself from falling, to wedge yourself against the wall. But the main thing is really, I think, is the person at the top, We should probably do first. I know we're doing the person who went last because fact time was first. So would that then mean that Silas was second, keeping into the margin order that you had?

Jon:

I should have let the big in go first, shouldn't I?

Barry:

And I was prepared to, but you just sort of strode off.

Mark:

We start with fact time.

Barry:

We had an agreed margin order.

Jon:

I did a rookie error. I went with what Mark was saying. Never go with what the ref says. Always.

Stephen:

Go on. It's fun. it's a slide come on.

Mark:

Well i think yeah if fact hunt doesn't hold on to the side and stop himself sliding down he'll take out the next person and so on so we'll start with we'll start with fact hunt and we'll go from there so it says an initiative test which you first edition it gave you plus 10 if you had acrobatics but that doesn't exist now is there an acrobatic skill or, let's do let's do athletics or climb whichever one you're better at and you can make a role so first of all for fact hunt to see if he um stops himself sliding well.

Jon:

Whatever it is i failed it by a massive amount.

Mark:

Okay so you knock into three baby so you come down bit of 83 you come down fast onto dorian so dorian you need to make the same i thought.

Barry:

We agreed i was next mark.

Mark:

Okay okay silas then you need to make the same test athletics or climb but you've got minus 10 because fact hunt is piling into you.

Barry:

Where would it have been? Hold on, let me just roll it and then we'll talk about what's happening. I don't think that's good.

Mark:

No. Okay, remember you do have your fortune points.

Jon:

We all drow and then you know me this pile of shite.

Mark:

What happens next is Dorian will have to make a roll with minus 20.

Barry:

I'm going to burn a fortune point on that. Can I roll again then?

Mark:

Yeah, you can roll again. Don't make a roll yet, Dorian, because we need to establish whether Silas and facts aren't the piling down on you before you do.

Jon:

Oh, actually, yeah, I've considered that. I still don't think my rolls are going to be worse.

Stephen:

Athletics or climb, you say?

Mark:

It's minus 10, Barry.

Barry:

Yeah, and I'm just looking for... So climb, my climb is... What did I roll? It's gone.

Mark:

40.

Barry:

40. Oh, my fucking climb is 36.

Mark:

So another fortune point to drop that score by 10.

Jon:

No.

Mark:

Oh, no, it won't work, will it?

Jon:

Yeah, that'll give you 10.

Stephen:

Oh, you made 26, didn't you?

Mark:

Yeah, because you got minus 10 to the roll.

Jon:

Oh.

Mark:

Minus 10 to your skill, actually. So you're on 26.

Stephen:

We're all going down, come on.

Mark:

No chance. So, Dorian, you've now got to make the roll. Cheers, guys. You're at minus 20.

Stephen:

Thanks. Thanks for that. Okay.

Jon:

Now, yell out the jinkies in a comedic fashion.

Stephen:

I wouldn't have made it anyway, but I'll try a re-roll on it just for why not's sake.

Barry:

Listen, if we get stopped from plunging into the poo by the bard, we'll never hear the fucking end of it.

Stephen:

Well, you haven't.

Mark:

All three of you slide down the bottom.

Barry:

Bizarrely, bizarrely, I'm relieved.

Mark:

You dropped to the bottom of this. What did you do? The pit gives way, the boards give way, and you fall down a chute. Who chutes?

Jon:

That's not how you say it.

Mark:

And you you are in the shit because whatever's gone on down the bottom here uh there has been some some additional uh element of uh jeopardy to it perhaps this wasn't meant to be here in the first place you're right there may be a sewer broken sewer pipe or something coming from the monastery that's caused this but you've dropped into into the ship uh so each of you have taken a, strength three hit so it's.

Jon:

Not warhammer if you don't get covered up to your neck in shit.

Mark:

And it's a really lucky.

Jon:

Scenario if you're the right way up when that happens.

Mark:

It's dead on you okay uh fact on you take uh four points of damage so it's a minimum of one so you can take off your toughness of that but you take a minimum of one damage that's toughness and your and your least armored location well.

Stephen:

That'd be none.

Mark:

Dorian you take six damage.

Stephen:

Okay.

Mark:

And, Silas, you take five damage.

Jon:

I'd like to claim an extra point of armor for landing on top of these things.

Barry:

I can take my toughness off of that.

Mark:

Yeah, you take your toughness bonus off of it, yeah, which I believe was four, wasn't it? So you only take a point of damage.

Barry:

My toughness bonus is three, I believe.

Mark:

So it hasn't done a lot of damage to you, but you are down a very long chute, and it looks quite difficult to climb out of. What you also notice here at the bottom of this... What do you like?

Barry:

I feel like it's done some damage to my pride, which isn't getting discussed enough.

Stephen:

I would have been all right if it weren't for you too.

Barry:

I would have been all right if it weren't for that one.

Stephen:

I know. What do you like? That's your idea.

Barry:

Foiled by a fucking staircase.

Stephen:

Just push me up a bit. I can climb up. I can climb.

Mark:

But before you think about climbing out, you do notice that this chute, this pit that you're in, isn't intact. The walls are broken in one corner. and it does look as if there is it is broken into a sewer pipe or a sewer entrance over into the corner of the pit, there is something else in here with you as well in amongst the poo and the darkness I don't know if you've got any light amongst you I think your lights would have probably gone out someone needs.

Jon:

To shoot it with the blaster while one of them goes all the.

Stephen:

Poop shoots at the detergent level at the crypt level.

Mark:

Something slimy something slimy is here.

Barry:

So does that mean we get to say to fact, your highness, what an amazing smell you've discovered.

Mark:

So this is this picture. I shouldn't show pictures, but I think it's great fun to show. That picture is going to be one of you guys in a moment.

Stephen:

Oh, good. Oh, good.

Mark:

It is a large constrictor snake that is about to coil itself around one of you in the darkness. And... it's i'm going to choose randomly it's it doesn't care who it is wait.

Stephen:

It should care.

Mark:

Obviously if mark was here i would have done gelato yeah exactly on the dwarf somewhere.

Stephen:

It was being constricted.

Mark:

Okay one two three uh one two factor three four dorian five six silas it is thank you so much so this thing starts to curl itself around you from the legs upwards and it's moving moving along your body i don't need to roll at this stage it's not causing you any damage, a bit too affectionate it's not warhammer hentai no it it does it doesn't seem like it has affectionate um intentions um.

Barry:

I'm assuming very attractive leg i'm assuming that i'm okay to stab it.

Mark:

You can yes so uh you're grabbing your sword or a dagger or something dagger i'm making an attack so I'm making.

Barry:

An attack yeah.

Mark:

We'll start with Silas I'm not sure what your initiatives are we'll go to initiative order in a moment your weapon skill is one of your main attributes so my weapon skill is 48, okay so you missed by two do we get three attempts remember can you aim.

Jon:

Is that still a thing is it.

Mark:

A half action.

Jon:

To aim and then a half attack.

Mark:

Only with missile weapons, uh barry you do get three attempts to hit i remember so you've got three opportunities to do so that is that doesn't so you've rolled a 55 which is a critical miss you don't get your third attempt and something bad happens unless you want to change that what.

Jon:

Was your weapon skill, so a fortune point makes that a critical hit.

Mark:

No it doesn't it turns it into a 45 which isn't so it only takes 10 off but it turns it into a hit oh damn it yeah so if you've rolled a 50 54 We get three fortune.

Barry:

Points per session, right?

Mark:

As many as you've got fate points.

Barry:

As many of you've got fate points left.

Mark:

Yeah. Yeah. Sorry, left.

Barry:

Bastard. So I've got one left.

Stephen:

One fate point.

Barry:

I used a fortune point earlier.

Mark:

So you've got one fortune point left. But this could be quite bad because if you don't use a fortune point.

Barry:

It's going to turn this into a hit. I am being shambled by a snake. Yeah, no.

Stephen:

Yeah, you might want to turn that into a hit.

Mark:

It takes it from being a critical miss to a hit.

Barry:

I'm definitely turning that into a hit then.

Mark:

Okay. uh so i i get two chances to resist because it took you two turns two tries to hit it okay, so i have it's rolled zero five so it's it's hit with well it's resisted with three degrees of success and with your 45 it it doesn't you don't you don't manage to do any damage to it your your sword or your dagger just glances off its thick scaly skin uh fact time what are you going to do.

Jon:

In a panic, I'll try and bop it with the stuff. I have no idea if I connect with whatever runs it.

Mark:

The thing is, it's dark as well. So I'm going to give you minus.

Jon:

None of us. I thought most of us had.

Stephen:

Could I have a torch?

Mark:

It would have gone out because it would have been dropped into this muck. So you're in darkness at the moment.

Jon:

I don't actually know anything's attacking anyone.

Mark:

Well, you can hear a hissing sound, and you would be able to feel this snake as well. And I think Silas would be trying to get you to be aware of what's happening. But hit in blindly.

Barry:

I am not suffering in silence.

Mark:

Okay. Silas knows exactly where it is. Whacking it with a starfish post-wagon, they give you minus 10 to hit.

Jon:

Yeah, no.

Stephen:

That's a brush Silas in my head.

Jon:

I'm trying to like some. Oh, good, try and like it all.

Mark:

Flint the tinder out.

Jon:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Mark:

Pick up your torch.

Jon:

I can feel where that is.

Mark:

And yeah so the so light um will resume and initially warning.

Jon:

For viewers you.

Mark:

Know yeah exactly that's a good way of describing it and dorian you can benefit from that yeah there is enough like john said there's little flashes initially until he gets the flame up and running but there's enough for you to act upon because you can grab a.

Stephen:

Dagger and plunge into the snake.

Mark:

You see in Freeze Flame, this snake sort of wrapping itself up Silas's torso. So you dagger out. Okay. You can attack. The snake cannot defend against this. It's only interested in constricting Silas, so you need to just hit. There's only one attempt at it because there's no opposed roll.

Stephen:

I did hit.

Mark:

Okay. Damage, please.

Stephen:

What did knives do?

Mark:

So they do strength plus two.

Stephen:

Jump us two, okay. then strath plus two, so seven damage then.

Mark:

Okay. So that damages it, wounds it.

Stephen:

Oh, no. Sorry, eight damage. I got four strath.

Mark:

Okay. Right. Significantly.

Stephen:

Whee.

Mark:

And you feel it releases you immediately, Silas. And it's uncurling and it's continuing past you and it appears to be trying to flee. I don't know if you want to let it do so.

Barry:

I have no... Yeah, it's fleeing. I would just want to get out of here.

Mark:

Okay. Then.

Barry:

Not because of the scary snake thing, but because of the shit.

Jon:

I don't think that'll taste like chicken after all the time it's been.

Mark:

Okay.

Stephen:

Yeah.

Mark:

Yeah. You watch it leave then. Cause you've got light now and it drifts and, and, and moves over toward the hole in the wall, the large hole. You could fit through this and it disappears into the sewage outlet eventually, which is where it's. seems to have come from.

Jon:

As long as it hasn't gone to get mummy.

Barry:

Quite.

Stephen:

I'll look up at where we've got to climb.

Jon:

Well, I think the least I could do is offer to brace and let people climb up. I think that's fair.

Mark:

This is a very long shoot that's headed down. You're not going to be able to stand on each other's shoulders. All three of you could.

Stephen:

Can you climb the wall?

Mark:

No, it's slippery and sheer. grappling hook uh do you have a grappling hook and rope if you do then i'm asking okay i haven't no no i've got a healing draft and.

Stephen:

I've got a um.

Mark:

Oh yeah if you had a grappling hook you could use that to get yourself out but you don't have a crowbar crowbar useful could somewhere else is useful that would be.

Stephen:

Could i use it as like a pick to try and climb the crowbar uh, Well, then we've got to go out that way then.

Mark:

You could balance on each other's shoulders and form a pyramid.

Stephen:

Like the Antil mob. Yeah. We can stay on each other's shoulders. Someone can get to the top, then we can help each other up.

Mark:

Okay.

Jon:

Yeah.

Mark:

Give it a go. We say it's an extended action. And if all three of you make, if one person makes a strength test and the other two of you make agility rolls, then you can climb out between the three of you. If that fails with just one attempt, really, and then you just know it's beyond your ability.

Stephen:

Okay.

Mark:

So who's going to make the strength?

Stephen:

We've got to make three rolls.

Mark:

No, one roll. One person has to make a strength, two need to make an agility. That's the person at the bottom and the two standing on top of him, basically, with the agility rolls. And the one at the very top then can reach the edge and pull himself out of the pit and then reach down for the other two of you. Who's making the strength roll at the bottom?

Stephen:

Yeah, I'll do that.

Mark:

Okay. Go on.

Stephen:

Yes, I made it.

Mark:

Okay. So you're holding on quite tight. Somebody climbs onto your shoulders. Agility roll from Silas, yeah.

Stephen:

No. Do I give them bonuses?

Jon:

Oh, nice.

Stephen:

What I made my strength roll by?

Mark:

No, it's not enough. He's rolled very badly. He rolled a 78.

Stephen:

I know it's not enough, but...

Mark:

Yeah. Okay, so you're not getting out that way. You're lucky there's another way out of here, into a sewage pipe.

Jon:

Yay!

Stephen:

Let's go that way.

Barry:

Deep joy.

Stephen:

Whose idea was this?

Mark:

Sewage pipe, left or right?

Jon:

Upstream?

Barry:

Which way is the poo flowing?

Mark:

Slowly it's flowing to the left is.

Jon:

It like the river Ankh can we just sort of tread on it if we run really fast.

Barry:

Do we want to go to the source or do we want to go to the lake well.

Stephen:

The.

Jon:

Source would be.

Stephen:

The Maison itself one of the holes in the Maison yeah.

Barry:

So we do have to follow the river of Perl I'm afraid.

Mark:

So you're going against the flow.

Stephen:

Yeah I'm going to light my torch as well again.

Mark:

Okay uh yeah so you do travel underneath the amazing toll and you see these chutes leading out but these chutes aren't.

Jon:

We have a.

Mark:

Stick these chutes aren't big enough for you to climb climb oh.

Jon:

For fuck the.

Stephen:

Other way then.

Mark:

Yeah so eventually you decide that you may have to go the other way at.

Stephen:

Least we can wash in the stream.

Mark:

So mark what i'll do is come back out to gelato as you're setting up the defenses. So up there, the walls have been reinforced gelato and the first undead are beginning to emerge. What happens is that a thick fog descends on the valley, And the Pau Mountain sun is soon gone, swallowed by a sky that is now heavily overcast and bruised with unnatural shadows. A biting chill also sweeps into the basin, and the temperature plummets by about 10 degrees. And this dense clinging fog begins to rise from the ground and engulf the monastery and the grounds, making the main buildings look like ghosts in the mist. now everybody that's been stationed in the buildings around the monastery itself are now being called into into within the walls as it seems obvious that there is something very now very close and beyond the outer walls comes a sound that chills your blood more than the wind a rhythmic rattling and a low collective groan of a nightmare on the march and through the thickening fog, gelato, and you'd be standing there looking out from these walls. You see silhouettes of bands of skeletons advancing steadily from all sides. The monastery is surrounded.

Little Mark:

Okay. Is there anyone that looks hard to be controlling them or anything like that?

Mark:

Not that you can see. And if you remember that the better skeletons did look completely the same as the normal ones. You cannot see Kemmler, the Lichmaster. Okay He's not here But these skeletal units are closing in But particularly a large amount of them are fixed on the monastery gates Okay, yeah.

Little Mark:

I'm obviously trying to rally the bodies around us and all that sort of stuff, and I'm looking for the one that's in control. I'm trying to spot the ones from last time, and if I find one, I'm going to make my way to whatever part of the wall will meet that person.

Mark:

So all parts of the wall are going to try and be breached, but it's the gates that look like where the main battle may occur.

Little Mark:

I'll go there then.

Mark:

Okay. so the dwarves will follow your lead Bardak's not there by this time Gimbrin's there and the other the other seven of them also and it does look like that you as the dwarven unit are definitely the best line of defence, a lot of the humans they're non-competence but they are they are definitely picked up weapons and the monks too are doing so, they're getting up and across those although they've been made higher there are people that can stand on the battlements here and they can on the walls themselves and they can knock these skeletons off as they're coming up. But you're forming this sort of line of defense, a circle around the main gates. So if they were to be breached, which is the main point in which they would be, then you'd be ready for them to come through. Also, there's this secondary wall of brushwood and straw ready to be fired, so you can withdraw further into the monastery grounds once these areas have been completely...

Little Mark:

You know what? Go where? Withdraw?

Mark:

Well, you know, withdraw one step back, and hopefully the flames will destroy some of the skeletons as they try and pass through, is the idea.

Little Mark:

No, no, fine to me.

Mark:

Okay, we won't roll anything. So you're waiting on this at the moment. That's what's happening upstairs.

Little Mark:

So the moment the first one makes it through the gate, I'm going to make a frenzy test and then go for it.

Mark:

Okay. All right. So we'll come back to you. That hasn't happened yet. So down in the crypt.

Stephen:

Poop shoot.

Mark:

In the poop shoot. Yeah. Okay. We'll call it that. So you're, you're unable. You could call up the toilet, up the lab and see if you can get anyone's attention.

Stephen:

Excuse me. Yeah. What are they going to do? Except for crap on us.

Jon:

We was then here to wipe out Klingons. No.

Stephen:

They could drop a log to us. Nothing else. Let's go back.

Mark:

What you think is this sewer will lead out of the monastery eventually? It's going to lead into the mountains?

Jon:

Right to the lab, because obviously it uses the flow of material components of some sort, I think.

Mark:

Well, unless you go back out and come all the way back round, this is definitely not the way to the lab. This would have been otherwise normally sealed, but time and age has destroyed the walls.

Jon:

Well, as long as we hide our shame and we sneak in, we've got keys. It won't be a problem. We know where to not go now.

Mark:

It doesn't take long until you're aware of somebody or something up ahead as this sewage twists and turns through the rock. You think you're hearing something ahead of you. The sound of animals.

Stephen:

Good.

Jon:

Oh, no. It's Warhammer. You know what they are.

Stephen:

What sort of animals are we?

Mark:

Well, they appear to be rodent-like in their mannerisms.

Jon:

This whole torch is up front. Note that.

Stephen:

We've talked them before. We talked about the rat people we saw in the shed.

Mark:

Yeah. Yes. Well, you've been counting them before. Well, they were rat men.

Jon:

I was expecting a swarm. Okay.

Mark:

Well, you're not quite sure how many.

Stephen:

I've been rat men.

Mark:

Yeah, so not rats. I mean, there could be a lot of those. These sound bigger, and they seem to be communicating with each other, but not in the language you understand.

Stephen:

The same things that were in the hut.

Jon:

Beastmen just have weird grunts and noises that they make.

Mark:

They're not but they seem to be arguing so much that they've not heard the fact that you're, closing in on them um so you can stop before you have alerted them from doubting a light but you can't see them well the light the light itself because it's twisting and turning this is echoing down from up ahead uh they they are very much distracted but certainly yes having a light source or speaking or moving has risks risk alerting them to the fact that you're behind them in the same passageway.

Jon:

They could be running from the dead as well.

Barry:

And when you say behind them in the same passageway, does it sound, if we stop, does it sound like they're getting closer?

Mark:

No, it sounds like they're moving away. So then you hear a scraping sound as well, something stone upon stone. And they definitely seem to be exerting themselves too and arguing amongst themselves.

Barry:

So they're moving something chunky, potentially of value, potentially important.

Little Mark:

Warpstone.

Jon:

A manhole cover.

Little Mark:

Warpstone.

Stephen:

Always warp stone with these guys.

Jon:

What's that other scary ceiling voice? What? Can I get close to another look?

Stephen:

Can I get close to another look?

Mark:

Well, you do that alone, do you?

Stephen:

Silent move. I can silent move. Yeah.

Mark:

Okay.

Jon:

Are you taking a light with you?

Stephen:

Well, if I don't need one, I won't. They've got light. Oh, I use their light.

Mark:

They don't have any light.

Stephen:

If there's any light coming from where they came from?

Mark:

No. If you turn your light out, it will be pitch black.

Stephen:

Then I'll need a little bit of light, yeah.

Mark:

Okay, that's a difficult thing. I suppose you can just leave the light on behind you so it's shedding a little bit just down the corridor.

Stephen:

Well, it's that point of going to look at it if I can't see them.

Mark:

No, okay. So with the light where you are, as long as you're not carrying that further toward these rat creatures...

Stephen:

If I can't see them anyway, you know?

Mark:

Then, yes, that potentially would be able to just take the edge off the darkness as you get closer to them. Okay, so you're creeping up. So you need to make a stealth roll.

Stephen:

Okay, so this light's enough to be able to see them if I did get to them.

Mark:

Yes.

Stephen:

All right, so they're not really noticed that then.

Mark:

They haven't noticed that to this point. Yes.

Stephen:

33, a crit. Wow.

Mark:

Okay, so that gives you control of the narrative for a certain at the time. What do you want to happen? Tell me.

Stephen:

You get close enough to exactly what they're doing, I suppose, yeah.

Mark:

Okay.

Jon:

A manhole falls open, crushes them, leaving the way clear for us to get out.

Mark:

So you get pretty close here and i.

Stephen:

Could join them.

Mark:

The level of light that you're using is is incredibly low but but they'll be kicking themselves for not noticing nonetheless but they seem to be obsessing with an object that they are dragging between them and there are five of these rat creatures and one of them is he looks slightly different to the rest he's dressed in robes and he has staff and he's more ornate looking and he's directing the other four of them these pathetic rat creatures and they're dragging a coffer, a large box but a box, And it doesn't look as heavy in reality as they're making it look. But they're having definite trouble dragging that along between them. And it's exhausting them too. And so they're slowly making their way. And this larger seer-like looking rat creature is directing them and getting frustrated with them. And he's insulting them in their own language. And they're cursing him back. But eventually they're making progress. They've taken a little bit of a rest there. And then they pick it up and they start moving along with it again. they're moving away in the same direction you are bastards.

Stephen:

I suppose with that role i could have you know get in there knit and they're still the box and come back again.

Mark:

So so the box is about, four feet by two feet high it's made of black wood with silver and iron bands and marked with many bizarre sigils and runes including a symbol of three lines that are crossed like that which You saw on some of their clothing in the past when you met them out on the mountain trail. If you remember, that symbol was something that they had. That symbol is on the box.

Stephen:

It's probably theirs anyway.

Mark:

The symbol of the horned rat.

Jon:

That shouldn't be the box that we're looking for then. But we don't know this because you haven't come back to sell us anything.

Mark:

I will break with tradition and tell you as we want to get this finished. It is the fucking box you're looking for.

Jon:

Damn it.

Mark:

I'm not going to let John take you down a tangent here. We don't have time for it.

Jon:

I've already got them in the shit. What more do you want?

Stephen:

I knew it was the box we was looking for.

Mark:

Oh, thank God. All right, okay.

Barry:

John tangents are good for the soul, man.

Little Mark:

These are not the boxes you're looking for.

Stephen:

I would say, no, it's not the boxes we're looking for. That's completely different.

Mark:

No, none of that. John, you're not getting away with that here, mate. This has got to be finished in time. All right.

Stephen:

I shall return and tell them then.

Mark:

Okay.

Stephen:

They've got our fucking box.

Jon:

I've said this the last time we ran into these weird-looking beastmen. At my best, I could take none of them. Mind you, I do have a shiny stick now. That might do something. You never know.

Barry:

Well, at my best, I could take all of them.

Jon:

Well, let's hope you're at your best then. Are you still injured from the... The spikiness.

Stephen:

Yeah.

Barry:

Marginally injured, not significantly.

Stephen:

I have a healing draft, too.

Barry:

Yeah, me too, but I don't need it yet.

Jon:

That was what I was asking.

Barry:

Yeah.

Jon:

Right.

Stephen:

Are we taking the buggers on?

Barry:

Of course we are.

Jon:

We have a choice.

Stephen:

Yeah.

Jon:

Gary Sealing voice says otherwise.

Barry:

I mean, we could give them an opportunity to not lay down their lives and just leave the box.

Jon:

Is it the same one as we... I know all Beastmen are going to look the same, but if they're all the same thing...

Stephen:

I don't think we'd beat them.

Jon:

Would it be the same one that we ran into before?

Stephen:

All Ratmen look the same to me. Come on.

Jon:

He did try to talk in human speech, which was weird. And I don't like it. And it's... Whatever it is, it's a creature of chaos. I think take him out first. what you saw I was going with was it no.

Mark:

I didn't it would be something far more intelligent than that but.

Jon:

You can't dally with the deviants you're not loading that for the next 10 rounds no don't have one it will.

Stephen:

Take me longer to load it.

Jon:

I'll have to go get it first you have to find a crossbow that will take that's the ultimate loaded crossbow I'm going to go buy one.

Mark:

Shut out the cars here get one of the monks to throw one down yeah.

Stephen:

Check one down.

Jon:

Yeah that's halfway through doing that when you pop down.

Stephen:

I'm pretty sure five of those rats would probably kill us, but...

Mark:

Well, it's not a wide enough corridor to have to be attacked by them all at the same time. It'd be two on two.

Jon:

But if they're...

Stephen:

Only one person can fight.

Jon:

If they're trying to steal that...

Mark:

Two can. Two on two means two people.

Stephen:

Only one person can actually do it. But yeah.

Jon:

Then if the... Muscadet was a proper wizard, like an empire-registered, Magister. And they're trying to steal that bod. That's not going to be good for anyone regardless. So if they're going to take you back to their beast, my mate.

Stephen:

Or we could wait for them to get it when they need to get it. At least we don't have to drag it then. I mean, save us some effort, wouldn't it?

Jon:

That might be further away than we need to get. That is sensible, but...

Stephen:

If they're dragging it to the Lich Master.

Barry:

They could be taking it to a place where there's a lot more of them meeting up as well. It's like, we know there's five of them now.

Jon:

The further they get...

Stephen:

We can let them have it, then we can steal it from under their noses. Their little rat noses.

Jon:

When there's more than there are now?

Stephen:

Or we can just open it.

Jon:

Well, that might waste whatever's in there. I don't know if this builds up or...

Stephen:

I don't know.

Barry:

I think we're overthinking this. I think we just need to fucking charge and rush them.

Stephen:

Yeah, yeah.

Jon:

Okay.

Mark:

Where's your letter when you need them?

Jon:

Don't know building walls.

Little Mark:

Doing bullshit i'm taking on an entire bloody army where are you lot doing something important.

Barry:

You want to die at the moment all you're doing is looking at an entire army you're.

Little Mark:

Not there as far.

Barry:

As i'm concerned.

Little Mark:

I'm knee deep in nothing but pelises.

Stephen:

Well i'm gonna take my um healing draft then.

Barry:

Get those two hit.

Stephen:

Points back that i lost okay.

Barry:

Definitely tucks the nerve there i'll take mine feels like a waste because i've only lost two hit points well.

Stephen:

Mine only gets back three because it gets back you're tough and so it's only one loss and by the time you want it you probably won't get back as many as you want.

Barry:

So for me it gets back four then so yeah I'm gonna wait I'm gonna wait.

Mark:

John don't lean over like that your webcam it makes it look like there's a ferret on your shoulder, just see out the corner of my eye.

Jon:

Who's this what.

Mark:

Don't worry.

Barry:

Right, Are we going to rush them?

Stephen:

Let's go kill them then.

Barry:

I'm just checking because I know it was on my... We are in agreement.

Stephen:

What?

Jon:

I guess.

Barry:

That we're just attacking.

Stephen:

I guess so.

Jon:

If we put a good show of it, I mean, they're only beastmen. They might run.

Barry:

Yeah. And when I say rush them, I mean, it should be like.

Jon:

Full-on Han Solo.

Barry:

Shock and thunder. Do you know what I mean?

Little Mark:

Yeah, but there's you involved. There's more going to be gentle spring and breeze.

Mark:

Han Solo had a Wookiee with him.

Jon:

Not at that time he didn't.

Mark:

You left your wookie on top.

Jon:

Yeah well that's the mate do with uh silas okay shall.

Barry:

I go then.

Jon:

Yeah seems.

Stephen:

Like your sort of thing yeah.

Barry:

I'm charging ma on your own.

Jon:

If duran isn't i will i'm gonna trust in this staff because i've got no choice i've.

Stephen:

Got a hammer i stole from the dwarves put my hat on There's.

Mark:

Two people could go in side by side. So one of you doesn't need to be in combat immediately.

Stephen:

Well, we keep the fat cunt out for a little while, and then...

Jon:

What did you say?

Stephen:

Fat cunt, I said. What are you talking about?

Jon:

Are you talking about the fire, not the character? Thank you.

Barry:

Yeah, he's fisting around your way in a way that you entirely intended someone to do at some point.

Jon:

I'm just amazed it took this long.

Mark:

Okay well silas has led the charge regardless i'll work out who else is with him uh in a moment but i'm.

Barry:

Going and i'm screaming at the top of my lungs proper full-on bat and cry shit.

Mark:

Okay i.

Jon:

Will also be screaming, it might resemble ned flanders at his very best but.

Barry:

Penelope pissed up.

Mark:

So with the extra light you get to see exactly how they will look they do look the identical same group that you met within the the old shepherd's hut on the the mountain path back at in our session zero days a bit.

Barry:

Then as well didn't we.

Mark:

Yeah they did run from you they ran out the corner of the heart through the broken wall yeah and yeah that was your first encounter i think wasn't it the one.

Jon:

That's got the temerity to wear clothes as if it's people i'll do that.

Mark:

Okay so yeah for everyone listening the session zero is on our podcast it's on the public feed So you can head back and listen to the last few episodes of that. You get the first part of that is for character generation. Then we do the intro to the Lish Master. So these are the same Skaven that you met then on the mountain trail. They are ready for combat by the time that you come in.

Stephen:

They're waiting for us.

Jon:

They didn't run in fear at the light and the very good manly screams. No.

Mark:

These Skaven are protecting the box and their seer, that stands further back with a box two. Okay, Dorian, you're first.

Stephen:

I'll hit one of the rap dudes. Okay. No, no. No.

Mark:

Okay. No need to resist that. Silas.

Stephen:

Oops. Oh, that's not good.

Mark:

That's another 99. What is it with you and 99s? You don't get to roll a gang, actually, because that's a critical miss. You've got no fortune to re-roll it, have you, Barry?

Barry:

I haven't.

Mark:

No. So you charge in.

Barry:

That was an absolute critical failure, right?

Mark:

It was lovely, yeah.

Stephen:

You probably took up on the way in.

Jon:

It's not the worst one, though, is it? Because if it's a lower number, it's worse.

Mark:

No, no, that is one.

Jon:

So an 11 critical failure is dark.

Mark:

Well, no, no, you're thinking about the old rules.

Stephen:

That's just embarrassing.

Mark:

11 would almost certainly always be a critical hit. So that is a bad roll because you rolled 99, I think, twice last session toward the end. So this is quite consistent of you. You've charged in and you've gone to hit this Skaven and your feet have just slipped underneath you and you've just landed flat back in amongst this muck of the sewer. You're already covered in shit anyway, but it puts you in quite a vulnerable position. Yeah, you style it out. Yeah, it's okay. Until this disarmerable bladed, whatever it is, a sword this scaven are using, but they're definitely bespoke items and they've modified or made their own type of weapon. It's quite distinctive. Curved sword, and it will come down flat upon your stomach when this thing gets to attack. and it does so before Fact Hunt. So I'm going to roll to hit on... I'm going to give it plus 20 to hit you, Silas. Let's get this one underway. So you've been hit with two degrees of success. So you are aware enough to either parry or to roll out the way and use a dodge, but you do need to make a resistance.

Barry:

How do I use dodge?

Mark:

So check your dodge skill, and then you get one attempt to roll under, because I've hit with my first fight.

Barry:

Massively.

Mark:

Yes. Okay.

Jon:

You've hit under a particularly chunky third.

Mark:

So you hold on to your sword and this this sort come arcs down towards towards your torso you just lift up your sword and and parry it and hold hold the sword still away from you okay it is on my back i'm running these bitches, don't talk.

Jon:

Because all that comes out is bubbles at the moment.

Mark:

Silas second attempt hit you with one degree of success not silas sir dorian second attempt it with one degree of success okay.

Stephen:

Try and dodge it i've dodged it with.

Mark:

Two degrees of success and the other skaven are uh desperate to get into fight but they can't they can't maneuver in and the the gray seer at the back is saying it's trying to speak in common it's not particularly good at it he says back away man things you've.

Stephen:

Got our box.

Mark:

Never yours never, it is okay fight continues silas i'm.

Barry:

Gonna see if with my axe i can attack that's a level with the ground and see if i can take one of their ankles out.

Mark:

Okay yep so it'll be a hit on the leg if you do hit so that's a weapon skill roll so the first attempt i'd imagine a miss what's your weapon skill you're rolling this.

Barry:

Is weapon skill 48.

Mark:

Okay so you roll 61 that's a miss so You get to try.

Barry:

Oh, fuck. I only touched it then. I don't know what happened.

Mark:

You rolled an 86 and a 65.

Barry:

I failed three times without trying. Thank you so much.

Stephen:

Well done.

Mark:

So that ain't going well. It's still got an advantage because you didn't get up, so it's going to be attacking you from above.

Barry:

I'm going to beat it from the ground.

Mark:

You arrived on the scene previous round. I'll give you an action at the end of this one. Silas.

Jon:

You said I can't hit them, so what I will do is that little light spell. One of the few bits I can do. I'll just get some sort of ambient light so we're not dependent on torches that can be dropped into this gunk.

Mark:

You just realised you got that, right?

Stephen:

Yeah, that would be useful.

Jon:

I forgot.

Mark:

Okay, so yeah, you got your that sort of...

Jon:

It still wouldn't have made any difference to anything else, just whether or not we had torches on us.

Little Mark:

We're so heroic.

Mark:

You do that sort of thing in society, you can get hung as a witch. Burn at the stake as a witch.

Jon:

I'm in the tour. I'm already in the shit.

Mark:

Yeah, it's time to show. What should go wrong? Yeah.

Jon:

He must have been with that weird beastman and his evil chaos magic. It's fine.

Mark:

Other people might see that and be slightly shocked that he has this ability to do that, but it's not time to worry about it.

Jon:

He's talking spellcasting, bastard.

Stephen:

Be more shocked if they all sort of got incinerated and died, but...

Mark:

Okay, Dorian.

Stephen:

Can I hit the one that's hitting Silas?

Mark:

Yeah, you can do. You're close enough, so you can take the attack over to...

Stephen:

Do I get a bonus to hit it?

Mark:

Two against one yeah two against one give you plus two as he's leaning.

Stephen:

Over trying to hit size I'll back him on the back of the head.

Mark:

Yeah we've been playing plus 20 actually I was looking back over the old podcast here we've been playing the old plus 20 here so we do 2v1 it's plus 20 I definitely.

Stephen:

Need plus 20 even.

Mark:

To get very close okay plus 20 to it.

Stephen:

Oh, yeah. Well, I've hit then. Plus 20 to hit.

Mark:

And they...

Stephen:

Wow.

Mark:

That's a terrible roll. So the Skaven in defense rolls 100.

Stephen:

I'd say he dies immediately.

Mark:

So you can have a narrative advantage here, or you can roll full damage. It's up to you.

Stephen:

Oh, fuck yeah. He's just giving me full damage. I'll take his brains out.

Mark:

Okay. So you get six, but you can roll under your weapon skill again with the plus 20 to try and get Ulrich's Fury.

Stephen:

No, I didn't make it. Well, I'll use a fortune point to make that work.

Mark:

Right, okay.

Stephen:

Just splatter his brains out.

Mark:

Okay.

Stephen:

We'll try to see if you wait. Oh, that's number six.

Mark:

This is going to be nasty.

Stephen:

Well, that's 15. That's 19 damage.

Mark:

19. So, yes. You wanted to splatter its brains. What weapon are you using? A sword? A hammer. That happens. You connect so solidly with this Skoven's head, and you hammer.

Stephen:

Oh, the hammer from the dwarves.

Mark:

It takes it across to the side wall, and the hammer breaks the skull, and the Skoven just drops down to the ground. The others seem quite shocked by this. The Skoven aren't the bravest of creatures, and they're not potentially rushing to...

Stephen:

Our box.

Mark:

They're more kind of surrounding the box and the seer rather than pressing the attack on you at that point. Although, Silas, the one that's standing over you, has continued to swing his back.

Stephen:

No, that's the one I hit.

Mark:

Oh, yes. You've got the one of Silas. Right. Okay. So the other one... would be put off a little bit. It backs off slightly so it doesn't pursue its attack after that show of strength. And it gives the opportunity for the seer to continue speaking. No fight. No fight, man things.

Stephen:

Give us the box, sir.

Mark:

Not yours. Never yours.

Barry:

While there's some conversation going on, can I be getting up?

Mark:

Yes, you can pull yourself to your feet.

Stephen:

Why do you want the box?

Mark:

It is ours.

Stephen:

What are you going to do with it? We need it. We need to kill the Nich thing.

Mark:

You cannot use it.

Stephen:

We need to kill them.

Mark:

Powerful. Powerful magic.

Stephen:

Exactly.

Mark:

Dangerous. You will destroy yourselves. Not possible. We save you from destruction. Take it from you now.

Stephen:

Oh, thank you.

Jon:

That's not chaos lies to me.

Stephen:

We need it to kill the... Wherever he is, the necromancer.

Mark:

We leave one less problem for you. You use this, you destroy yourself.

Stephen:

Well, I wasn't going to use it, but I think he was. I was going to pipe behind.

Mark:

They're obviously at your mercy here. They're not particularly strong as a group individually just being confronted like this. Go on, Barry, sorry.

Barry:

Well, I was going to say we're going to carry on fighting because we don't want to get into the new... First of all, I don't believe that they have any honourable intentions with the box, and we need the box. so either they're giving us the box or we carry on fighting right.

Mark:

Okay so you can you can attack the one standing in front of you i mean why not just for a blade i mean he's ready for it so if you want to just lash out the back away from me you can i'm.

Barry:

Just checking that the rest of the party agree yeah.

Stephen:

I've had my actions right i suppose yeah i splattered one all this chaos lies.

Barry:

Right okay i'm fighting all right, Oh, for the love of God. One.

Mark:

Yeah.

Barry:

That's all right, isn't it?

Mark:

Zero eight. So you had 50, didn't you? Did you say 48? No, that's four degrees of success. So I've got two attempts.

Stephen:

Oh.

Mark:

It criticals its opposition role with a 22. And as you swing your sword down, it brings it, and your sword, there's this clang of steel, and your sword flies from your hand and falls into the mud, sort of over to the side. and he jabs forward to respond to the attack. And he hits you with one degree of success. So you can only dodge this now because you don't have your weapon.

Barry:

So I'm looking for rolling under 38.

Mark:

You've done well there.

Stephen:

Yeah.

Mark:

So you've dodged it.

Barry:

Okay.

Mark:

Yeah. Dorian, did you want to?

Stephen:

I'll bash that one. You just bashed him.

Mark:

Okay. Yep, you can roll to hit.

Stephen:

If he hits him already.

Mark:

Yeah, you get your plus 20.

Stephen:

Well, I missed anyway. First time around. Second time was a good hit of five degrees.

Mark:

Okay. He gets two attempts to parry that. Doesn't do so. So you can roll your damage. What's good damage?

Stephen:

Nine.

Mark:

Okay. It takes that, but it's another hefty blow, and it squeaks in pain. And it's got no choice, really. So another one steps forward, so it's 2v2. so you've got four scaven left two of them are standing very close to the seer and they're trying to drag the box away and the seer is just telling them to stop they're never going to out run you so he's going to have to so he starts to to spell cast it is fact hunt.

Jon:

This is a way of getting through past these or the other two, is there?

Mark:

No. You wouldn't be able to get past them, though. You can do something at range, but there's nothing you can do to get through.

Stephen:

Get range, was I?

Jon:

I want to do something stupid, like throw the staff at him.

Stephen:

Here, take the staff as well.

Jon:

I can't do it. that's not not shit i've got nothing okay uh but the staff.

Mark:

Is buzzing away if you can if you can get yeah if you could attack something you'd figure out what it does.

Jon:

Can i throw a hang on i don't have a little can i throw something at him try and disrupt whatever he's casting literally a lump of shite if i can catch him in the face with that it might you.

Mark:

Can you can pick up a bit of rubble actually this sewer pipe is in not in good nick so there are bits and pieces of.

Jon:

Okay and i'll throw it and hopefully not hit the party members yeah.

Mark:

Okay that's what critical misses do.

Little Mark:

So you can.

Mark:

Go on we know what's going to happen.

Little Mark:

I like the way when john rolls dice he moves closer to the screen have you noticed.

Jon:

That's because i can't find my glasses so i've literally got to be here before I can actually read anything. Not good. I can see fingerprints, but I can't see... everything else is just terrible.

Mark:

We could always make the roll for you if you don't. John's quite nicely displaying why he didn't play the last four sessions.

Stephen:

97 year old. I'm guessing that's a miss.

Jon:

Of course I fucking did.

Mark:

Well, it's not a critical miss. Fuck it, I won't say.

Jon:

Point oh god no but i will use the fortune point to uh turn.

Little Mark:

It into a critical miss yeah.

Jon:

Yeah give.

Stephen:

Them another chance of quickly hitting us.

Jon:

The last thing that came up on the table here was 50 oh hang on no no that was in the right okay right uh, i have no idea how i did it um.

Mark:

Oh yeah that's true you got the dice off yeah yeah that seems better.

Stephen:

Well i don't know i'm not sure okay was i allowed to aim.

Mark:

Yeah you can aim and get plus um plus 20 to hit but you wouldn't have had a lot of time what did you miss by not.

Jon:

Less than 10.

Mark:

Yeah okay then okay let's give it to you because i think yeah it's a nice action and it would be great so with With a little bit of luck, you managed to, this rock flies in and smacks into the side of the Skaven Seer and puts him off at least for a round from casting.

Jon:

All odds are after.

Mark:

Yeah. So you've had the effect you wanted there. And the attacks from the other two Skaven, the one on Dorian, because there'd be two V2 here. And we're looking at three misses there. So Dorian, you don't even have to make an opposed roll. One on Silas. Uh, 0, 8. So it's hit with three degrees of success with the first attempt, Barry. So you need to make a decent roll. You still don't have your axe, do you? So you need to, unless you've got a second, a secondary weapon, you're able to.

Barry:

I've got dagger and I've got knuckle duster.

Mark:

Okay. It would be pretty good with both of those.

Barry:

I've got knuckle duster.

Mark:

Okay. So with your dirty fighter now, you can get to use it for the extra damage. Wow, that's a decent roll.

Stephen:

Is it?

Mark:

Yeah, 0, 6. so 86.

Barry:

It was 86.

Mark:

Oh sorry oh fucking.

Barry:

Hell gamesmanship now.

Mark:

You're not doing that oh i see no i'm gonna roll damage on you it's five that's how they do that is 12 damage but i'll take my.

Barry:

Toughness bonus off it right.

Mark:

Yeah an armor an armor if you have any armor in any locations it it hit you on the on the legs yeah.

Barry:

Okay, I'm undamaged on my legs, actually. And what did you say? Also five.

Mark:

So you take 12 damage.

Barry:

12, but I take four off, so that'll be eight.

Mark:

Okay, that's the first real hit that they've had on you, and that gives them some encouragement. So the fight is really up and running again now. It's Silas, no, it's Dorian's attack.

Stephen:

I'll be, I'm beginning. Okay, I'll hit the one that's on Silas, and I'll need the two against one.

Mark:

Okay, so you're both now getting plus 20 to hit if you're both going for the same one, yeah.

Stephen:

I think the ones in front of me are wounded, but...

Mark:

Yeah, one of them is.

Stephen:

Miss, miss, and miss with the critical.

Mark:

Okay, do you have any fortune too?

Stephen:

Do I have fortune, so I'll re-roll it, yeah.

Mark:

Yeah, I'll be safer.

Stephen:

And miss.

Mark:

Even with plus 20?

Stephen:

Even with plus 20.

Mark:

Okay, Silas, you get to hit. now then you get plus 20 as well because it's teaming up bonus.

Barry:

So that's a critical success, isn't it?

Mark:

Yes, 33. Nice one. Okay. So with your knuckle dusters, you land a decent punch. You can do maximum damage, or if you think there's anything you want to happen narratively.

Barry:

I mean, which one of a punch? The one that was in front of me?

Mark:

Yeah.

Barry:

Or the seer?

Mark:

No, you're not close enough to the seer to punch him.

Barry:

Not close enough to the seer.

Mark:

Yeah, so it's the one you're attacking.

Barry:

Okay. I want to knock him far enough back that he hits the sea and not to do any damage but just to show that we are moving forward and it is relentless. Okay.

Mark:

Yeah. He flies back under the pressure of the punch drop.

Jon:

It's still doing normal damage though, don't you?

Mark:

Yeah, you can do normal damage so you get the narrative.

Barry:

I don't know what my knuckle duster does for damage.

Mark:

So you've got dirty fighting so it would normally be strength plus one so now it's strength plus two.

Barry:

So it's a dagger yeah what strength bonus plus two yes plus a d6, Say again? Plus a D6.

Mark:

Yeah. And if you roll a six, then that...

Barry:

So two plus six, that's eight points of damage.

Mark:

Okay. It takes it. So that still is a significant hit. And these creatures are in no means to go down fighting. They'd rather flee and live to fight another day. You know, they've searched out this box for the last 30 years. The blow that Silas did that round, although it didn't kill the Skaven, gives them more pause for thought. So the battle pauses again. and the seer says uh the box no use to you you do not have power no power we have power i have power you.

Stephen:

Could do our guy then.

Mark:

Yes if i if i help you with box we have box deal deal man yeah.

Stephen:

That sounds good to me.

Barry:

Why didn't you open with that.

Stephen:
